Event Overview

The "Data Visualization Showdown" challenges participants to transform raw data into compelling narratives using interactive dashboards. Participants have 1 hour and 30 minutes to create a data visualization using any software of their choice (e.g., Tableau, Power BI). Following this, they will prepare an 8-10 slide presentation to explain their thought process, design choices, and key takeaways.

Key Points to Address:

  1. Identify and visualize trends in sales over time.
  2. Highlight the performance of different product categories.
  3. Analyze customer demographics and their impact on sales.
  4. Explore geographic distribution of sales and identify key regions.
  5. Provide actionable insights for business improvement.

Judging Criteria

  1. Data Storytelling (40%)
    • Effectiveness in telling a story
    • Capturing audience attention
    • Guiding through a clear narrative
  2. Data Clarity and Accuracy (30%)
    • Accurate and clear data presentation
    • Well-labeled axes and legends
  3. Visual Design (20%)
    • Visual appeal and engagement
    • Effective use of color, layout, and visual elements
  4. Interactivity (10%)
    • Encouragement of data exploration and interaction (Optional but encouraged)

General Guidelines

  1. Participation is open to teams of two or three.
  2. Basic knowledge of data visualization principles is recommended.
  3. Each team must have at least one laptop preloaded with their preferred data visualization software.
  4. Internet access may be limited during the event, so ensure your software and necessary data files are downloaded beforehand.
  5. Practice your presentation to ensure clarity and conciseness within the allocated time limit.
  6. Maintain professionalism and ethical conduct throughout the competition.
  7. Organizers reserve the right to modify rules and regulations at any time, with changes communicated to participants beforehand.

Event Structure

  1. Visualization Round (60-75 minutes)
    • Participants create a dashboard using their preferred software.
    • Focus on data storytelling, clarity, visual design, and interactivity.
  2. Presentation Round (3 minutes per team)
    • Teams present their dashboards.
    • Prepare a short presentation 8 to 10 slides. (10 minutes)
    • Explain thought processes, design choices, key takeaways and Q&A with judges (5 minutes).

  • Data Sets: Pre-provided data sets for the visualization challenge.
  • Software: Ensure compatibility and pre-installation of Tableau, Power BI, or other preferred tools.
  • Guides: Basic tutorials and tips on data visualization principles.
  • Practice Sessions: Optional pre-event practice sessions for participants.

  1. Understand the Data: Spend initial minutes exploring and understanding the data.
  2. Plan Your Story: Outline a clear narrative for your visualization.
  3. Keep It Simple: Avoid clutter; focus on key insights.
  4. Use Color Wisely: Enhance readability and highlight important data points.
  5. Practice Presentation: Rehearse to stay within the time limit and ensure smooth delivery.
